Smart Water Heater Controller Study

Project Number DR17.06 Organization SCE End-use Water Heating/DHW/HPWH Sector Commercial Project Year(s) 2017 - 2019
Description
Increased electrification of residential end use fuel types are expected as a result of activities promoting achievement of Zero Net Energy (ZNE) buildings. Because of this, there is much interest in the opportunities associated with electric water heaters. Retrofit controls are available for water heaters, to reduce demand/energy consumption. These controls learn and adapt to the unique usage patterns of a water heater, to reduce standing losses, and ensure water heating is only operational when needed, ideally at low electricity cost periods. These controls are applicable to electric and gas tank/storage water heaters (not tankless, not heat pump).
