Residential In-Home Displays (IHD)

Project Number PGE 0711 Organization PG&E End-use Whole Building Sector Residential Project Year(s) 2007 - 2008
Description

Project Summary

In-home display (IHD) devices provide homeowners with “real-time” data on total home energy consumption, giving them greater control over energy use and taking the surprise, delay, and mystery out of monthly utility bills. This study determines if IHDs encourage homeowners to curb energy use. Experience in the UK and Canada is encouraging, showing that adopting IHDs may cut energy use up to 7 percent. Current-generation IHDs receive energy use data through current transformer clamps or optical reading devices. New versions are being developed that support advanced metering infrastructure integration, time-of use-rates, and the ability to receive critical peak pricing signals.
