Project Title
LED Screw-in Lamp Power Quality
Project Number ET13SCE8010 Organization SCE End-use Lighting Sector Other Project Year(s) 2013 - 2014Description
Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology offers energy savings potentials and performance over incandescent and Compact Fluorescent (CFL) technologies. There are regulatory pressures to promote the use of LEDs, however LED lighting technologies rely on the use of electronic power supplies or “drivers.” This introduces similar power quality issues to that of CFLs. There is a very large amount of screw-in type sockets in the market that are being targeted for LED technologies and while each lamp may have minimal wattages the aggregate potential impacts may be significant. This potential barrier to the technology is not very well documented in the industry nor are there sufficient standards for testing and rating power quality for these types of lamps. Conducting a complete analysis of power quality in various load and control scenarios will help in gaining an understanding of the changes in performance and behavior these products may have if deployed in large scale. The added insight into the performance of screw-in LED lamps would feed into grid level investigations as well as provide valuable insights into development of utility and lighting industry standards. Laboratory testing using a load bank designed to simulate residential wiring. Validation of the impact of LED technology on a household system level.
