DR Strategies for Big Box Retail Stores

Project Number DR 06.02 Organization SCE End-use Other Sector Commercial Project Year(s) 2006 - 2008
Description

Project Summary

An energy information and communication (EIC) system was installed at a Sears/Kmart store in Ontario, California. The EIC system received data from the electrical panels serving the air conditioning system and overhead lighting, as well as main electric panel serving the store. This data was transmitted to a web server every 15 minutes. To evaluate the demand response potential, a signal was sent from the web server to the EIC system in the store requesting the EIC system to reduce overhead lighting by 50% and raise the cooling temperature set point by 2 degrees. This produced a 53 kW or 16% demand reduction without impacting business.
