Agriculture Lighting Applications

Project Number ET18SCE7060 Organization SCE End-use Lighting Sector Agricultural Project Year(s) 2018 - 2023
Description
"Indoor Horticulture utilizes electric (also known as artificial) lighting systems that have the ability to generate specific and tunable wavelengths to generate plant growth and development. The baseline and measure horticultural lighting systems shall provide a comparable level of service and the energy use of the baseline solution must be adjusted to provide a comparable service as the Energy Efficiency measures. This Project will pursue conducted Lab and Field demonstrations studies using the “Southern California Edison Indoor Horticulture Measure Eligibility and Calculations Methodology to quantify indoor horticultural lighting energy savings opportunities".
Project Results
This Project pursued conducted Lab and Field demonstrations studies using the “Southern California Edison Indoor Horticulture Measure Eligibility and Calculations Methodology” to quantify indoor horticultural lighting energy savings opportunities. The global indoor farming market size was valued at USD 34.2 billion in 2022 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.5% from 2022 to 2030. By 2026, the Indoor Farming Industry is expected to reach USD 53.7 billion. Increasing consumer awareness regarding the advantages of consuming fresh and high-quality food is expected to drive the growth of the market. The rising population across the globe, especially in emerging economies such as China and India, has led to an increase in food demand, which, in turn, is expected to spur the growth of the market for indoor farming in the forthcoming years. Accordingly, this increase in demand also has energy use and carbon footprint implications. Microgreen case systems, indoor modular systems, and display cases are commonly seen in Europe and are now infiltrating into the U.S. commercial and residential markets including restaurants, grocery stores, and homes. These free-standing glass case systems will appear in restaurants nationwide and will visually display microgreens. Residential indoor horticulture will also increase and makeshift these units into homes. As the transition occurs, SCE has interest in managing this load growth and delivering clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to account for these increased loads and achieve its Building Electrification and Decarbonization future goals. Indoor Horticulture utilizes electric lighting systems that can generate specific and tunable wavelengths to generate plant growth and development. The baseline and measure horticultural lighting systems shall provide a comparable level of service and the energy use of the baseline solution must be adjusted to provide a comparable service as the Energy Efficiency measures. There have been many innovations within the LED technologies within the past 15 years from improving efficiency, controlling of the light spectrum, and improving fixture longevity. With these developments in indoor agriculture, the sector has grown to a $47 billion dollar market in the USA that is projected to continue growing each year.
